Fillings are necessary to repair tooth cavities and protect against further decay. Cavities get bigger over time, so the sooner they’re spotted and filled, the less likely you are to have problems later. This is why regular check-ups are so important. We offer two alternative types of fillings; the traditional amalgam fillings; or newer, white composite fillings for a more natural looking smile.
Dental amalgam is the traditional silver-coloured filling we are all familiar with. It is very hard wearing, which often makes it a good choice for fillings in your back teeth. These amalgam fillings can last anywhere from 20 to 40 years with proper care. This type of filling is available on the NHS.
Composite fillings are more difficult to place than silver fillings and so take longer to complete, but they can be matched very closely with the colour of your teeth. Because they look so natural, they’re a perfect choice if your filling will be visible when you smile, laugh or talk. Composite fillings are only available privately.
Reducing the amount of time your teeth are exposed to sugary or acidic food & drinks can have a surprisingly big impact on the need for fillings in the future.
It goes without saying, but make sure you see your dentist and hygienist regularly to head off problems before they occur. Brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes, in conjunction with the right toothpaste and brush, is crucial. Remember to change your toothbrush or head at least once every three months.
